Week 6 Activity: Architecture & Urban Planning

Here in Southern California we have our own “version” of Central Park. It is located in downtown San Diego right by the SD Zoo. The park is called Balboa Park and has many different attributes of Spanish influence.

This shot is over looking the Koi fish pounds onto the Botanical Gardens. Photo credit myself:

This is one of my favorite part about the park, the second favorite are the large trees they you can climb up and relaxing in. Over all many different things are working in this area. The land scapping it beautiful. The buildings capture the historical factors, and so much more really make this area relaxing.

Week 6: Artist of the Week Nikki S. Lee

Nikki S. Lee is a koren film maker and photographer. She was born in south Korea in 1970. Nikki is now back in Seoul, South Korea living and working. She was living and working in New York for some time. Nikki had earned her BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) at Chung-Ang University in 1993. After completing her BFA, Nikki moved to New Work  to attend the Fashion Institue of Fashion in 1994. Then in 1998, Lee earned her Masters in Photography at New York University (NYU).

While still in school, Lee had made a book called “Projects”. The photos from the book ranged from 1997-2001. Lee was using a simple point and shoot camera to capture these images. Lee had posed with many different typed of people. She dove right into the American culture at the time. With in the book you will see different ethnic and social groups. Again here, we see another artist using identity with in their work.

Here are some images from the “Hip-Hop Project”

Here some images from the “Seniors Project”

Looking at some of these photos from the book we can learn several things. The 1st thing is how does foreign nations and people see us as americans? and Vice Versa, how do we as americans view other cultures? Also we can take away how other social groups here in America are too. Like the saying says, a photo is worth 1,000 words.

Week 5 artist of the week: Victorine Meurent

Victorine Meurent was a model for painters and a painter herself. Was was born in Paris in February 1844 then passed away in in March 1927 at the age of 83. When looking at the google image search you will see edouard manet work to show up too. This is because Manet used Maurent as a model for his own work. Yes, : Victorine Meurent  was well known for her modeling for painters, she also made a name for herself in the painter realm. She exhibited at the Paris Salon. This Salon was high end and prestigious.

Victorine Meurent started to model at the age of 16 years old. Her first modeling gig with Manet was in 1862.

Week 5 activity: Spray Paint

exit

This is a mixed media piece. The canvas size is 20×20″ with the back ground of oil paint, the “exit” in spray paint  and “at your own risk” in acrylic paint. Lately I have been messing around with spray paint. Using it on used wine bottles, my night stand, and even on a in process coffee table.

With the wording “exit at your own risk”, it could mean main different things in this day in age. My sister was talking about all of her friends who are still out here in southern california vrs. the friends out in New York. Most if not all of her friends out in New York (thats where she went to college) all got “big kid jobs” right after graduation. Then her friends here in Southern California still have yet to find a job or even complete college. (She graduated college in 2014). So exit at your own risk could lead to the “After life” of college were mommy and daddy won’t help you out anymore.

“Exit at your Own risk could also mean the on going political, issues here in America. Racial issues, Marriage issues, and as of today here in Califorina, a parent cannot use the “Religion” or “Personally beliefs” for not getting their child vaccinated. So exiting at your own risk when logging onto Facebook and etc. because you will be seeing and hearing things that will upset you.

Week 4 Artist of the Week: Joseph Cornell

Joseph Cornell was a New York Based artist who was know for his surrealist art and his avant-garde films. Cornell was born and raised in New York and then died in New York in 1972 at the age of 69. Some of Cornell’s “best known” works would be Shadow Box’s or Cabinet’s of curiosities. These cabinets were ”  were small collections of extraordinary objects which, like today’s museums, attempted to categorise and tell stories about the wonders and oddities of the natural world.”  (http://www.bl.uk/learning/timeline/item107648.html)

When Cornell would create a shadow box, the items in the box were typically found objects.

Week 4 activity

Summer Longing

I used the sketch up program when making the lounge chaise. It was a little weird for me to use at the begging! I went with the chaise lounge and stone side table with it. I just to work at pier 1 imports for 4 1/2 years and this would be the time we would be selling a lot of outdoor furniture. What would be better to lounge on pool side? A long chair

| Francesca Woodman | Artist of the week

Francesca Woodman is an American Photographer. She was born in Colorado in April 1958 and then died at a young age in New York in January 1981. Woodman is best know for her black and white photos. The subjects within her work included her and female models. Then from time to time Woodman used male models for her work.

Woodman deals with gender and identity in her body of work. We have also seen around the time the Woodman’s work, Cindy Sherman also working with identity and gender. Why is this? What i get from looking at her photos is that she is showing off the different sides of woman. Their family backgrounds, ethnicity. Also looking at her work she deals with nudity. This is a venerable moment for any one. Some of the models are hunched over, others are coving their bodies almost ashamed, and others are their like “here i am”. Woodman also played with “Blurring” the images too. She was able to have a “Blurred” image by movement and a long exposure times.

“Appropriation in art is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them” (Definition from wikipedia.com)  One of Woodman’s work was appropriated. The piece of work was “Untitled Rome” 1977-1978, had taken place with in a room. Woodman is hanging (my her arms) in a door frame with a chair that is just off-set. Fast forward to 2007, Muurizo Cathela remade this piece, but as a sculpture. When it came time to back up this piece and transport it, the person was put into a create. The artist of this piece like the human sculpture so much with in the create, it was shown at the next exhibit in the create. Then in 2010, Vanessa Blaylock made an “avatar” version of the sculpture in the create, Woodwards original piece was a photograph of herself. This 2-D figure transformed into a 3-D replication, then into just a 3-D female in a create, then finally into a 2-D image.

Transformation

Woodman

Largely, Francesca Woodwan’s work has been stated as powerful, dark, sad, and more. To me she pushed boundaries within her field of work. Just some questions to ask yourself after looking at her work. How does this affect you? Does it make you sad?
